Emotional Manifestations of Stress

We feel stress in our body, mind, and in our emotions. It affects us on every level whether we know it or not. A lot can happen to us due to stress and it is not always clear that stress is the cause. The emotional stress we feel can do real harm to us. It can cause irrational decisions, anxiety, and panic. Emotional stress can be very uncomfortable but with proper skills and a more productive mindset we can protect ourselves from much of the damage.

Emotional stress comes in many formsemotional-manifestations-of-stress

There is much to be said about the effects of emotional stress and much that can be done. Stress in essence is a physical response to an external stimuli. It serves to protect us from a harmful environment. It is rooted deep in our brain and is in direct relation to the fight-or-flight response. This stress response however is now being redirected to our society. A once protective trigger has been transformed by our urban environment to a far more useless tool. It can be protective and it does help us but the majority of stress is not beneficial. The stress response explodes out of the brain and affects the whole body. The mind shuts down to it’s lower levels of functioning and our emotions run wild.

What can be done?

Much can be done to protect ourselves from emotional stress. The first step is to identify all of the things that cause you stress. Make a list and begin to think more in depth about what really stresses you out. Once you identify your stressors begin to think about how they can be avoided. Not all can and you will never escape them all and in fact that would be  harmful to your growth. You will also need to find quality stress reducers and stress reduction techniques to further protect yourself from excessive stress. Stress Management Strategies: Self Control

There are so many stress management strategies, some effective and some not. The effectiveness is due to the technique itself or the compatibility with you as an individual. Either way there is a deeper level you can delve self-controlinto and come out of with a real sense of control and calmness, even in the face of your biggest stress. There is a core foundation to lay and with the right knowledge and building the right skills you will have the strength to not just overcome stress but to prevent it from arising. Developing self control is vital in life and to learn to use it in a variety of ways will enrich your life at it’s very foundation.

Build a meaningful foundation

Building a foundation of strength and thoughtfulness will project outwards into every part of your life. You will be enriched and enlivened; problems you didn’t relate to stress will vanish. You can use stress management strategies to a much more effective degree. You will be working for yourself in a much more efficient manner and the doors of opportunity will open for you.

Adapting to your new skill-set

To achieve this we must adapt a new skill-set. The first step is to understand what you tell yourself your mind and body follow. It is amazing what neuroscience is uncovering. When we think we are about to eat a meal our blood sugar lowers, our stomach prepares and our metabolism picks up. Whether or not we eat the body still follows the mind. We can use this concept and all those like it to our greatest benefit.

When we tell ourselves we are going to be stressed by an event and that event happens sure enough we feel the stress response. We program into our mind what we want to have happen. Just think about it; people respond to events differently. One many become stressed, frightened, happy, etc when an event happens. They are choosing how they react to it. No one can upset us without out our permission.

A stress response example

Imagine a room full people at a party having a good time and all the sudden a clown walks in. Some people are excited because they love clowns. Another may become stressed because he thinks the circus is overwhelming. Others are afraid because they had a bad experience and always told themselves that clowns are scary. They are all right and their feelings are all valid. Sure some of this is predetermined by personality but most of it is from what we have conditioned ourselves to believe with the words we speak to ourselves.

Listen to your subconscious

The subconscious is always listening to what we say, the body is as well. What we tell ourselves affects us emotionally, physically, and mentally. What we think about on a daily basis comes from the beliefs we have built in life. We build beliefs by thinking in certain ways and perceiving the world with our unique touch. Your body and mind are always listening for your instructions. You have the choice to be who you want to be. To start building a stronger self control we must enter into new habits with our internal and external dialog. This is the key first step and we will discuss this and the steps that follow it in much more depth in the upcoming articles.

If not, what can we do to take steps to lower the stress?

There are many important question that often we do not ask ourselves because we have been accepting the conditions as they are. We have been coping with any variety of methods and allowed this level of stress tolerance stress level and to be OK. In most cases this level of tolerance for stress is excessively high.
